Volunteer Needs: Help at the NCTC Service Project Day!

  • June 27, 2024
  • 8:00 AM - 12:00 PM
  • NCTC, 698 Conservation Way, Shepherdstown, WV

NCTC is hosting a Service Project Day with the Native Youth Congress (NYCALC) on June 27th from 8:00 AM to 12:00 PM!

We are humbly requesting volunteers to help with some of the working groups for 3 to 4 hours that morning.

Proposed NYCALC Service Projects 2024:

  • Native Plant Nursery (10-20 ppl) Project Summary:
    • Replace raised bed boards, painting/waterproofing structures, adding crushed stone dust between beds, sorting pots, weeding and organizing planting beds, installing weed management matting around outside perimeter, straightening perimeter fence, and general clean-up.
  • Weed pull stations (10-15 ppl) Project Summary:
    • Weed/pull invasive plants and shrubs around the pond near Support Services pond.
  • Reforestation (20-30 ppl) Project Summary:
    • Straighten tree shelters, clear around the base of trees, identify any dead trees for future replacement.
  • Quad Brush clearing (20-30 ppl) Project Summary:
    • Hand tool work to clear woody overgrown shrubs and invasive plants from high visibility areas around the front of Lab building and Instructional East.
  • Erosion Control/Rip Rap (10-15 ppl) Project Summary:
    • Needed at pond near Support Services and possibly elsewhere; can work with Mike M. and Kat K. to identify and assign work. Facility Ops (Kerry M. or Teresa W.) will need to give permission for this project and prior setup/staging is needed; have bulk riprap staged nearby.
  • Prepping native plant seeds for meadow planting (10-20 ppl) Project Summary:
    • Preparing seeds and making "seed bombs" for future pollinator projects.
  • Children's Treehouse Project Summary:
    • Nickie should provide but to include water sealing wood elements in the outdoor classroom area behind Daycare

All tools and materials will be provided and staged at the appropriate locations.

It's a fun, enriching experience to help at one of these stations, and you will learn something yourself as part of this event. Plus, it always looks good on your list of accomplishments!

Ellen Murphy (ellen.l.murphy@comcast.net) would be happy to answer any questions you might have if you are willing to participate.

Hope to see you there!
